| Details: | In the field of medicine and health care people face the vulnerability of human beings every day. Working in these areas means being confronted with two great challenges: firstly, bringing the diseased body or psyche into focus, commonly for providing reconvalescence. And, secondly, the challenge to meet the patients on eye level in order to keep sight of the human being, which is the just cause of those being treated. People with serious diseases, who therefore are dependent on medicine and health care treatment, often struggle with shame and fear of being humiliated. Whether human dignity is at all subject to compromising, and if so, whether it is seen to be threatened in these situations is and has been the initial point of controversial academic discussion as well as social concern. It is a common place that human dignity plays a crucial role in contexts like ‚dying in dignity‘, ‚deception concerning the graveness of one’s disease‘, ‚compulsory treatment‘, ‚embryo research‘, and ‚economization of health care systems‘. Furthermore human dignity plays a fundamental role in legal and political constitutions like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, or the Basic German Law. There are, however, also various doubts with respect to the notion of human dignity. From this the question arises: What is this concept about? Or, finally, is it about anything at all? This year’s AEM-Conference carefully examines theoretical and practical issues with regard to the concept of human dignity. Different professions such as health care, medicine, philosophy, jurisprudence, theology etc. strive to achieve an adequate understanding of human dignity and seeking answers to the question of how to meet each other on eye level. Please note that the conference will be held in German for the most part. |
