Death Without Suffering Ethical issues of medically assisted death and palliative care in pluralistic societies advanced European bioethics course - Course - The Netherlands

Details: Objectives The course aims to educate the participants on a range of ethical issues in medically assisted death and palliative care. Thus, an extensive understanding will be provided into the medical, philosophical, theological and ethical foundations of these concepts. Lecturers D. Gracia (Spain), W. Dekkers, B. Gordijn, H. ten Have, D. Willems and Z. Zylicz (all from the Netherlands) Co-ordinator Norbert Steinkamp, MA, Nijmegen, The Netherlands General Syllabus Lectures and discussion groups will be centred around six principal topics: (1) Death, Suffering and the Concept of Palliative Care (2) Death and Suffering: Ethical Perspectives (3) Ethical Issues in Pain Management in Hospice Care (4) Scientific Research in Palliative Care: Ethical Issues (5) Palliative Care and Euthanasia (6) Autonomy and Dependency in the Face of Suffering. Parallel sessions will focus on case-analyses. All lectures and parallel sessions will be held in English. Participants The course is primarily directed to health care providers (e.g. physicians, dentists, nurses, health lawyers, hospital administrators, bioethics committee members) and professionals in the areas of ethics, philosophy and theology. Senior students undertaking courses of study in the health professions are also invited to participate. Price Euro 295. This includes tuition and course materials, as well as refreshments, two lunches and a dinner on Tuesday.
