Details: | CONCEPT The daily activity of a cancer hospital is fraught with ethical challenges and difficult decisions to be made by researchers, clinicians, patients and caregivers. Frequently, these issues become entangled in moral values, religious beliefs, legal constraints, professional duties and medical guidelines, which add layers of complexity to biomedical decision-making. Moreover many of the decisions to be taken are strongly entrenched with gender issues. As a consequence, those who have to choose could be in a sort of ethical decisional paralysis. This situation spurs for the necessity of services provided by ethical counsellors to support the ethical decision-making of both patients and physicians, without weakening the autonomy of the former and without relieving the responsibility of the latter. The masterclass is focused exactly on this topic and it aims to provide participants with proper philosophical tools to positively cope with those situations. The Master in Ethical Counselling in Oncology and Gender Issues resorts to the tradition of the ethical critical thinking and is based on the idea that an ethical counsellor is a mediator between the ethical knowledge and the patient’s or the clinician’s ethical needs, in order to help them to take the right choices for the patient’s well being. The Master in Ethical Counselling in Oncology and Gender Issues is expected to attract professionals and analysts from the oncological sector, including physicians, nurses, counsellors, social workers and patients’ representatives. MAIN TOPICS • Ethical counselling in oncology • Gender issues • Ethical decision-making and clinical decision-making in oncology PARTICIPANT'S PROFILE • Psychological or ethical counsellors • Medical oncologists • Clinical oncologists • Onco-geneticists • Genetic counsellors • Nurses LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Improve caregivers and health professionals’ ethical skills • Provide a philosophically-based methodology to discuss the controversial clinical cases • Practice in case discussion • Deep focus on gender issues |
