Details: | INTENSIVE BIOETHICS COURSE: The Joseph and Rose Kennedy Institute of Ethics is one of the world's premier institutes for research in bioethics. Situated on the historic campus of Georgetown University, overlooking the Potomac River, the Institute brings together leading scholars and the finest library dedicated to the field. A pioneer in bioethics education, the Kennedy Institute offers bioethics courses designed to address the most challenging topics in health care ethics. These courses provide the opportunity for participants from different fields and disciplines to come together for a few days to explore the theoretical framework and practical issues of bioethics with a distinguished faculty. In a unique structure, lectures and panel discussions are paired with small group discussions, allowing detailed exploration of issues and personal interaction with faculty and other course participants. The course is truly intensive; with much of the intellectual interchange taking place over shared meals and in extra discussions organized around participants' interests. Specific aims and objectives for the course are to introduce participants to the philosophical underpinnings of bioethics and current major topics in the field, and to provide them with the skills to define and describe various principles and approaches to bioethics in medical practice, law and public policy. Participants will understand and be able to demonstrate bioethical principles within a solid framework of decisionmaking in clinical, research and policy settings. While on campus, course participants enjoy full access to the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature, the world's largest collection of bioethics resources. A committed staff of professional librarians is available to assist course participants with bibliographical searches for their research. They also offer a series of invaluable training sessions for those interested in learning how to access bioethics databases and the burgeoning resources available on the Internet and World Wide Web. Your attendance begins an ongoing relationship with the Institute and its resources. Course participants receive a one-year membership to the Kennedy Institute Member's program; membership benefits include a subscription to the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal and an invitation to the annual Members' Symposium. PRE-CONFERENCE LIBRARY SYMPOSIA: Jump start your research and reading and make the most of your time at the IBC! The National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature (NRCBL), is home to a premiere collection of bioethics literature. The reference staff of this library, the world?s oldest and largest of its kind, offer IBC participants a pre-conference seminar on bioethics resources and reference services designed to orient and introduce attendees to the collection and associated online bioethics databases, and to highlight resources available to them onsite and online. The library?s holdings include ? in addition to more than 240,000 books and articles ? archival materials from federal bioethics commissions, videos and documentaries, course syllabi, and several special collections, such as the Kampelman Collection of Jewish Ethics and the Rose F. Kennedy Collection on Women, Infants, and Children. Almost 500 journal and newsletter titles are available. The ProSeminar?s three components cover a range of text and computer based resources, and incorporate hands-on experience and individualized instruction and consultation. * In the library, librarians offer an overview of the collection?s extensive and often unique holdings and share a targeted sample of new and classic materials useful for your research, writing, teaching, and clinical practice. * In the computer lab, participants are: 1) introduced to the use of several free, web databases containing bio-ethics information (e.g., PubMed, LOCATORplus, and ETHX on the Web); 2) trained in techniques to retrieve bioethics information from these databases, including crafting a precise search strategy using the library?s unique numeric classification scheme;and 3) given the opportunity to try these search approaches online. * Finally, a scheduled consultation with a reference librarian permits each participant to obtain individualized help in identifying resources for primary research interests based on a bibliographic search request submitted in advance of the course. Each attendee will receive an extensive searcher?s manual prepared by the staff: Bioethics Searchers Guides: Using National Library of Medicine and National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature Databases. Three core, pre-conference sessions are offered: Monday, June 7, 2004 from 7 to 9 pm; and Tuesday, June 8, either from 10 am to noon, or 1 to 3 pm. Consultations with librarians will be scheduled during the week. The ProSeminar requires pre-registration and an additional fee of $100. Space is limited! Sign up for the session of your choice on the registration form. To register / apply for IBC '04, please see the registration form. PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS ON CLINICAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS: The Center for Clinical Bioethics, in conjunction with the IBC, is offering a preconference workshop for participants that is specifically tailored for those charged with responsibilities in clinical and organizational ethics. The cost for each of the workshops is $100, and participants may enroll in one or both, indicating their selection(s) on the registration form. Each workshop is scheduled for three hours and will include an overview of the current state of the art of clinical or organizational ethics (first hour), an exploration of its methods and tools, e.g., ethics com-mittees, consult team, case work-up methodologies, evaluation strategies, etc. (second hour), and a concluding case study to facilitate application of this material. Each workshop participant will also receive a manual at the conclusion of the respective session. The Clinical Ethics program has been designed to provide participants with the opportunity of seeing how the Georgetown faculty: describe the current challenges in clinical ethics, structure the hospital ethics committee and ethics consultation team, and conduct ethics rounds and ethics work-ups.
