Faculty of Law,
Auditorium Zeger Van Hee Leuven Belgium |
Keywords: | Genetic research/engineering - Intellectual property/Patenting |
Details: | Recent events have convincingly shown that public opinion is very sensitive to the use of the patent system in the field of genetic inventions. Discussions arise particularly with regard to the patentability of diagnostic and therapeutic applications based on genes. Concerns are expressed with regard to the possible chilling effects of patents on access to healthcare. The conference offers an in depth survey of the patenting of diagnostic methods, both from a practical, ethical and legal perspective. The conference also provides mechanisms to gain access to patented technologies. First, by way of conventional licensing agreements and patent pools. Second, by way of compulsory licensing for public health reasons. The conference is designed to bring together a number of leading international experts to discuss the various aspects of diagnostic patents |
