Details: | The Notre Dame Forum on Biomedical Ethics invites you to join us for the Ninth Annual National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference, dedicated to examining the increasing cultural focus on medicine. The NUBEC is the premier bioethics conference in the country that is specifically geared towards undergraduates. The National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference is an incredible opportunity to hear from renowned speakers and leaders in the field of bioethics, and to learn from them first-hand about the pressing issues in the field of health care. Students come away with a newfound interest in the topics presented, and well as in the field of bioethics itself. This conference brings students of all backgrounds from across the nation and unifies them under a common goal to discuss important ethical issues and their practical implications in a format that is educational, interactive, and fun! The theme that we have selected for the Ninth Annual NUBEC is a consideration of the increasing cultural and societal focus on medicine. We would like to structure the conference into four separate, but related tracks: mental health, sensory health, metabolic health, and reproductive health. Attendees will be given the option of attending smaller interactive breakout sessions focusing on a unique aspect of one of these four fields. The format of the conference will also include larger plenary sessions allowing the participants to report to the group what they have discussed in the breakout sessions and introduce more broad questions such as: How does one know what is really a disease? How do you know if a person is really ill? In what cases is medical treatment the best course of action? Is the government responsible to provide medical treatment in those areas where we are expanding the definition of disease beyond its traditional limits? What sort of legislative decision-making process is there relating to these different groups of patients? What themes are common among these patients and their cases? Additionally, shared meals and receptions will serve as a forum for fostering discussion among students from around the country. The entire conference provides undergraduates with an unprecedented opportunity to meet leaders in the fields of bioethics, clinical medicine, philosophy, and law. The national undergraduate bioethics conference is a time for undergraduates to learn from leaders in the field of bioethics. Yet, it is also a time for students to gather among a national audience of their peers, to learn from one another and voice themselves on pressing contemporary bioethical issues. Go to the ?Conference Participants? link to find out how you can get involved in the conference! The conference will take place at the Center for Continuing Education in McKenna Hall on the beautiful campus of the University of Notre Dame. The University is the premier Catholic institution in the country with a long-standing tradition in academics and ethical thought. Situated in South Bend, Indiana, the campus is easily accessible to people from across the country by plane, bus or train.
