Details: | The aims of this international, multidisciplinary conference are to explore the emerging field of Islamic bioethics and to highlight the diversity of methodologies and practices that the field encompasses. The organizing committee therefore encourages the participation of theologians, sociologists, experts on Islamic law, historians, legal scholars, scholars of comparative religion, anthropologists, health care professionals, bioethicists and others to join us in reflecting on the challenges that bioethical issues present to Muslims and to Muslim societies. We anticipate panels devoted to a variety of subjects, including but not limited to: Beginning and end of life, religious approaches to suffering and healing, quality of life, technological intervention in the body, gene therapy and genetic counseling, disability, bodily integrity, and the physicians' relationships to the patient and to the wider society. Paper proposals are welcome from both emerging and established scholars, in any field and addressing historical or contemporary data. In light of the interdisciplinary spirit of the conference, papers should be comprehensible to scholars of other disciplines. Paper proposals are to be 1-2 pages (500-900 words) and should make clear the thesis of the paper, evidence being examined and methodologies employed. |
