Keywords: | Stem cell research - Organ/tissue transplantation |
Details: | Aims Recent publications about stem cells raised therapeutic hopes needing confirmation by solid experimental data. The main goal of this workshop is to give to participants the state-of-the-art of the stemness concept and to address the practical and ethical questions raised by the development of clinical trials using progenitors or stem cells. Some major characteristics of stem cells such as self-renewal, plasticity and microenvironment will be developed. Two specific examples, the embryonic stem cell and the adult mesenchymal stem cell will then be presented. Discussions will also address our present knowledge about the immunogenicity of these cells. Finally, their use in cell therapy will be followed through examples of clinical trials currently performed. Programme The first part of the workshop will define the main characteristics of a stem cell or a progenitor cell: asymmetrical division, self-renewal, dedifferentiation, reprogrammation, microenvironment, homing will be visited through various models, such as drosophila, xenopus and mammals. We will then focus on two specific stem cells: the embryonic stem cell and the adult mesenchymal stem cell. Their respective immunogenicity after transplantation will be outlined. Finally, two round tables devoted to therapeutic clinical trials currently developed towards myocardium, endothelium bone and joint reparation will allow addressing questions raised by the establishment of a clinical protocol, including reglementary and ethical questions, giving a large place to interactive discussions with participants. |
