Ethik-Medizin-Gerechtigkeit / Ethics-Medicine-Equitableness - Seminar - Deutschland

Date: 01.06.2007, 09:00-19:30h
Location: Gästehaus Frauenlobstraße 1 Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt am Main
Deutschland
Keywords: Health care system/Health policy - Medical ethics - Pharmaceutics/drugs
Details: Along with the medical and technical advances in the recent decades, insufficient health care on the global as well as on the national level and unequally distributed health resources and have become one of the urgent social problems that are to be resolved in the 21st Century. Having acknowledged this, the societal realignement of the relationship between ethics and medicine becomes compellingly necessary. The lecture series opens with a general reflection on the grounding ideas of medical ethics: technical innovations and scientific research drastically alter the situation of clinical medicine especially for those working in the medical professions. How do ethics respond to these challenges? Unlike this inquiry, which is primarily concerned with science and research, the medical humanities emphasize the question of the addressee of medical action, while also taking the social contexts of medical practices into account. In this approach to medical ethics, the turn to the patient?s autonomy has become the focal point. This raises the question: What consequences do these two approaches bear for medical ethics in the context of the ethics of the sciences and humanities? How ? in the face of a multitude of actors in medicine and the complexity of medical diagnoses and treatments ? the autonomy of patients as citizens can be realized, is to be specifically examined by a legal-ethical inquiry. This reflection then is to carve out the rights of individuals within the given plurality of values, cultures, religions and traditions. In this inquiry, structures of social injustice are identified and confronted with the promises of modern medicine and health policies. The gap between the technical development toward diagnostics and therapy and the provision of or research in basic health-care is increasingly widening and is by no means to be simply seen as a problem between national borders. To separate the reflection upon grounding ideas in medical ethics from strategies in health policy that are aimed at a general enhancement of health care has increasingly proven untenable. Given the globalized economic and social developments, the issue for medical ethics in the 21st Century is to connect these two levels of reflection and to integrate them into one theoretical framework. International Conference On the 1st of June 2007, an International Conference will take place, exploring the chance to proceed in this direction of social medical ethics on a global level. This series of lectures brings divergent ethical views on the political, research, as well as application oriented praxis into a dialogue. The question of justice is introduced as a question of national and international health care policy. And from the vantage point of philosophical/political ethics a theoretical framework is presented as a contribution to the Global Justice Debate. These theoretical deliberations are illuminated by a specifying set of exemplary inquiries, namely into * the health care systems (Netherlands, South Africa) * the role of the Catholic Social Teaching in global bioethics * the commercialisation of the human body The Conference concludes with a panel discussion, in which the central question concerning the connection between the reflection on grounding ideas in medical ethics with strategies adopted in health care policy is discussed in the context of the German society.
