Pathways of Human Dignity: from Cultural Traditions to a new Paradigm - Conference - Schweden

Date: 31.10.2007, 19:00h to 04.11.2007, 08:30h
Location: Klosterhotel Vadstena, Sweden
Vadstena
Schweden
Details: Human Dignity is a notion of central moral, legal, political and philosophical importance, as has been widely accepted since the United Nations adopted its Universal Declaration of Human Rights nearly 60 years ago. There is much that remains unclear, however, regarding the historical roots of the notion of human dignity, its role in the history of different religions and cultural traditions, and its internal relationship to human rights. Moreover, within current debates over international justice and bioethics, both the implications of this notion and its precise content are deeply controversial. Pathways to Human Dignity is the final conference in a series of workshops, organized by the European Science Foundation and the University of Linköping, the International Union of Academies, the UNESCO, the International Social Science Council, the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies, the Institute for Catalan Studies and the Netherlands Research School for Practical Philosophy. The conference aims to bring together the various perspectives on and debates over human dignity and to identify, from the perspectives of different disciplines, what further research is needed.
