Imaging and Integrating Heterogeneity of Plant Functions: Functional Biodiversity from Cells to Biosphere - Workshop - Deutschland

Date: 29.07.2007, 20:00h to 31.07.2007, 13:00h
Location: Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH Wilhelm-Johnen-Straße 52428 Jülich
Jülich
Deutschland
Keywords: Biodiversity - Green gene technology
Details: The Meeting will take place between 29 and 31 July 2007 at FZJ, Jülich, Germany. The workshop will start on Sunday evening in Jülich with a social dinner in a city park and an introductionary talk. It will end on Tuesday, early afternoon. Scope Plants form the green roof of the biosphere, are the primary transducers of solar energy and atmospheric chemistry that supports all life on Earth, and are also first responders to global environmental change. Today, a common challenge faces plant systems biology and Earth systems biology: to observe, integrate and quantitatively evaluate functional biodiversity in space and time. There is little point to listing the elements of biodiversity itself (individual species or ecosystems) without an understanding of their functions in response to environmental variables. We need to identify functions at the cell, tissue and organismal levels, and to be able to observe and integrate these functions in diverse, complex ecosystems in order to understand and predict the feedbacks of living plant biota on the Earth system. Eventually, we will need to incorporate these insights into the design of plants better suited to the changed global climate that is transforming human life support systems on Earth. The importance of this task has been recognised in the recent decision by the European Space Agency to press ahead with the next phase of its FLEX program (FLuorescence EXplorer; measuring photosynthesis from space).
