| Details: | Regulations in the field of modern medicine and biotechnology often involve decisions that profoundly affect the self-perception and fabric of societies. One problem with such decisions is that it is almost impossible to ground them in existing, clearly drafted and uncontested legal or ethical standards. Moreover, decision making processes are often ill-equipped to catch up and keep pace with rapid scientific and technological developments. The Symposium poses the question of how to address these legal and ethical challenges in a democratic or legitimate manner in national legal orders, at the European and the international law level. It thus seeks to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange and reflection on various aspects of the legitimacy of ethically relevant decisions. At the Symposium young researchers and practitioners in the areas of philosophy, medical ethics, sociology, politics and law (international, European, national and comparative law) present and discuss their research and experience on these questions. |
