Interdisziplinäres Kolloquium für NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen: Clinical Ethics Consultation: theories & methods - implementation - evaluation - Conference - Deutschland

Date: 11.02.2008 to 15.02.2008
Location: Institut für Medizinische Ethik und Geschichte der Medizin Ruhr-Universität Bochum
Bochum
Deutschland
Keywords: Medical ethics
Details: Since the 1970s clinical ethics consultation services have been developed and implemented in clinical practice. In the light of an increasing number of technically possible treatment options and differing ethical views regarding an appropriate use of these measures, clinical ethics committees and other types of ethics consultation provide support for the analysis of ethical conflicts and facilitate the decision-making process. At present a broad range of clinical ethics consultation services exists in many countries of the European Union. The services show similarities as well as differences with respect to aims, methods and underlying theoretical background. The conference will focus on the theoretical and methodological foundations of clinical ethics consultation as well as empirical research regarding the implementation and evaluation of these services. An important aim of the conference is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary discourse among young scholars (PhD students & post-docs) from countries of the European Union who work on theoretical and empirical research projects in the field of clinical ethics. We would like to invite scientists and scholars from disciplines such as medicine, philosophy, theology, nursing studies, psychology, law and social sciences and other fields to present their research projects and to contribute to the interdisciplinary discourse. All 15 participants will have the opportunity to give a presentation of their work (20-30 min.), followed by a discussion (30-40 min.). In addition, there will be workshops focusing on selected theoretical and practical aspects of clinical ethics consultation as well as a public lecture held by a "senior scientist" with expertise in research as well as the practice of clinical ethics consultation. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the lecture in detail with the speaker the following day. On the final day of the conference, there will be a joint session with members of the European Clinical Ethics Network (ECEN). All participants are invited to prepare a manuscript of their presentation and to submit it for peer review and publication in a book summarising the results of the conference. Expenses for travel, accommodation and meals will be paid by the conference organisers. In addition, all authors of the book will receive a remuneration of 300 EUR. Abstracts (1 page) along with a brief curriculum vitae may be submitted until 5th November 2007 (via e-mail).
