Date: | 15.05.2003 to 16.05.2003 |
Location: | Meeting Plaza Conference Centre (Hoog Catharijne) Utrecht The Netherlands |
Details: | The main topic of the conference is how public policy in different countries deals with moral issues. This topic generates procedural or processual as well as substantive questions. When, how and by whom are moral issues put on the political (policy) agenda? What kind of consultations and debates take place before a policy is adopted? Which positions have been adopted in which policy areas on the basis of which arguments? What kind of instruments are used for implementing a policy? What is the role of legislation and the law? What is the role of an 'ethical expert' in policy discussions? What ideal picture of 'the ethical philospher' exists in different countries? Which ethical 'theories' have proven to be useful or relevant to formulating a policy? The main topic will be approached by focusing on more specific issues. Four workshops on Thursday 15 May: (1) Multiculturalism, (2) Questions at the start of the lifecycle, (3) Care ethics and (4) Animal health and welfare. |
