Keywords: | Neuroscience |
Details: | Recent work in the neurosciences has gone a long way to clarifying the neuronal substrate of emotional and motoric responses to others. Specific examples will be discussed in the context of particular works of art. The question that arises is the degree to which this work can be applied to responses to art and to images more generally. The philosophical tradition has tended to exclude emotion from esthetics, while discussion of motoric responses has largely remained metaphysical. The material bases of esthetic response are often taken to threaten the contextual foundations of historical investigation. I consider some of the ways in which history, phenomenology and neuroscience might mutually illuminate each other, without detracting from the integrity of the disciplines. |
