The Department for Medical Ethics and History of Medicine at Goettingen University is an academic institution devoted to research and teaching activities in the field of bioethics. The department is closely linked with the Centre for Information and Documentation on Ethics in Medicine (IDEM) of the German federal association “Academy for Ethics in Medicine”.

IDEM and the Department for Medical Ethics and History of Medicine together co-ordinate the EURETHNET project.

Academy for Ethics in Medicine - Information and Documentation Centre for Ethics in Medicine

Established in 1986, the Academy for Ethics in Medicine (AEM) is an internationally known non-profit making organisation with offices in Goettingen. Its more than 400 members include physicians, caregivers, philosophers, theologians, jurists and members of other professions.
The AEM does not take a specific ethical view but sees itself as an independent forum for varied views and convictions. It aims at promoting the discourse on ethical issues in medicine, the health professions and the health care system. To this end, it carries out scientific projects, organises conferences and symposia, launches working groups for dealing with special topics, advises individuals as well as institutions, and publishes the journal “Ethik in der Medizin” (Springer Verlag).
The AEM is member of the European Association of Centres of Medical Ethics (EACME) and represents medical ethics within the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF).

In 1992, the Information and Documentation Centre for Ethics in Medicine (IDEM) was established at the offices of the AEM.
IDEM’s services include
 the creation and maintenance of a literature database
 special bibliographies
 literature searches on order
 help in obtaining listed literature
 finding experts for lectures
 expertises and projects

From 1996-1999 IDEM coordinated the establishment of a European information and database network for ethics in medicine (EUROETHICS), which was the basis of the current EURETHNET project.
