Thesaurus Ethics in the Life Sciences

In 1999 the German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences (DRZE) initiated the development of a trilingual thesaurus (German, English, French). The intention was first of all to create a central tool for both improved access to literature and advanced bibliographical searches in the DRZE's own bioethics literature database BELIT.
Under the title "Thesaurus Ethics in the Life Sciences" work began as a co-operation between the following five institutions

• DRZE (German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences, Bonn, Germany)
• CDEI (Centre de documentation en éthique des sciences de la vie et de la santé de l'INSERM, Paris, France)
• IDEM (Information and Documentation Centre for Ethics in Medicine, Göttingen, Germany)
• IZEW (Interdepartmental Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities, Tübingen, Germany) and the
• KIE / NRCBL (Kennedy Institute of Ethics / National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature, Washington, USA)

When the DRZE became partner in the EURETHNET project, launched in April 2002, work on the thesaurus had already progressed very far. As one of the EURETHNET projects is the establishment of a European core thesaurus, a work group was established which monitored the further development of the thesaurus developed by the DRZE and its partners.
