Law 9/2003 regulating the contained use, deliberate release and placing on the market activities with genetically modified organisms, implements both Directives 98/81/EC and 2001/18/EC.

The fundament basis for the procedures set down both in the directives and , logically, in Spanish Law, is the Precautionary principle, and each operation are assessed case by case, and following a "step by step" procedure to introduce them into the environment.
