Italy has adopted two EC directives concerning contained use of Genetically Modified Micro-organisms and the deliberate release of Genetically Modified Organisms.

Legislative Decree of 12 April 2001, No.206 implements the European Directive 98/81/EC on contained use, and Legislative Decree of 3 March 1993, No.92 implements the European Directive 90/220 EEC on deliberate release and placing on the market.
